I’m going to go back to the basics here and answer the question “What is a Facebook Fan Page?”
According to Facebook Fan Pages are for a local business, a brand, product or organization, an artist band or other public figure.  So what does that really mean? Glad you asked.
I’d recommend that any local business set up a Fan Page so that they can communicate with their local patrons.
If you are a speaker, consultant, author or coach you should also be sure to set up a Fan Page for your ‘brand’.
Independent professionals like hair stylists, yoga instructors, and Pilates instructors should also set up Fan Pages for their “brands”. (This is especially useful if they end up switching studios or salons and they’d like to continue communicating with their favorite clients)

You can also set up Fan Pages for your products, services and often times websites.
Since February 2010, a Facebook Fan Page has a lot of the same features as a Facebook profile for an individual.  You can allow fans to post comments on a wall area.  You can add photos, videos and even feed your blog or Twitter updates directly into your Fan Page.  Plus there a a lot of other really neat features that you can use to engage, entertain and excite fans.

Stay tuned for future posts about how to get fans for your fan pages and create compelling reasons for Fan to engage and interact with your Fan Page on a regular basis.

First let me define ‘Tweetup’: In-Person meeting of Twitter Users.

Basically any in-person networking event organized by social media.

So what’s in it for you to organize a Tweetup?

1) You’ll be viewed as a Leader or the “Go-To” person for that topic or interest area.

2) You’ll be creating Community. This is not something to be taken lightly. Being able to gather people around a cause or interst area is a powerful persuasion skill to be developed and nurtured.

3) You’ll be building creditability and influence for yourself, especially if you are able to gain some media attention.

Don’t make this one to hard – remember any in-person networking event organized by social media can be considered a Tweetup. Standard event planning tips and tricks apply.

I think the best part of a Tweetup happens during the event because the majority of attendees came because of social media so they are more likely to use social media to talk about the event! That’s a great opportunity for you to gain testimonials and generate a lot of buzz for yourself and the event.

So go out there and plan an event with Facebook, Meetup or Twitter! It doesn’t have to be big! Some of the most valuable meetings I’ve had only had 5 or 10 people in attendance.  But the conversations and connections we were able to make was much deeper than if the room had been filled with 100′s of people.

Linkedin gives you three areas where you can add website links to your profile. Most people take the easy way out and have links that say “My Blog” and “My Website.” But the smart marketers and followers of this blog are in for a treat!

By choosing “Other” in the edit area you can type in keyword phrases that describe how people can search to find your business.  Then each of those links becomes an inbound link by a ‘very highly regarded by Google’ site, Linkedin.

Pretty simple huh?

While I’m all for quantity, there does stand some reason to monitor the quality of your Twitter followers. So about once a quarter I like to do a purge of those Twitter followers I feel aren’t an ideal fit.

Twitter Karma http://dossy.org/twitter/karma/ is the tool I use to do the semi-automated purge. Basically its an application that lists all your friends and followers in a way that’s easy to look at a glance.  It’s sorted by last update, showing those who must recently updated first. You can sort the list alphabetically, either ascending or descending by Twitter ID.  You can also filter the list in several other ways: only friends or only followers, all friends or all followers, and mutual friends. Then you simply go through and check all the people you’d like to unfollow and with the click of a button you will automatically unfollow those people.

How do I choose who to unfollow?

-Anyone having anything to do with anything lewd or X-rated. (You can usually tell this by their Twitter ID or the picture they use).

-Anyone looking to just spam (Weight Loss Related, Dating Related, Teeth Whitening)

Other than that I usually keep the other followers. Hope you find this tip helpful!

To Your Social Media Success,

P.S. If you ever encounter a situation where Twitter tells you, you can’t follow anymore people…by unfollowing some unnecessary people you’ll be able to go about following people again.

<itunes:summary>When people see you in Linkedin searches or when you contribute to a group discussion do you know what people see? Have you appropriately edited your profile to attract people to you instead of confuse them?

The initial thing people see is:
1) Your name
2) Your photo
3) Your “Professional Headline”

Unfortunately the professional headline by default is their job title. BOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRRRRRRRIIIIIIIIIIIIING! Quite possibly this is the headline from your LAST job. Ugh!

This is a great opportunity to practice your micro-copywriting skills and focus on what you do to help people.

Use mine as an example: “Help those that are lost, confused and overwhelmed with Social Media find direction, clarity and control.” I keep tweaking it as the copywriting bug hits me and I’d advise the same for you.

You can easily edit your headline via “Edit my Profile”.

What do you think about this tip? What’s your new headline?
