Twitter may be hot and on the top of mind but you shouldn’t forget about blogging.

If you haven’t started blogging…what are you waiting for? (if you’re stuck on ‘What to blog about?’ contact me for a consult, we’ll get that taken care of straight away!)

Having your own blog remains the strongest platform for sharing your ideas and having a continued dialogue with the world.

Here are 5 reasons you need to blog.

Tells a Story of True Commitment. As often as you blog you are sharing your passion with your industry and the world. I’d recommend setting a goal of at least 2 blog posts per week. Remember, your expertise grows in significance with each post. Yes it may seem odd the first few posts, like you are putting messages out there for no one but look back a year later and you’ll be proud at your accomplishments and discipline.

Search Engine Juice. Ideas expressed in blog posts are indexed by Google and there for anyone to search and find you forever. Your Twitter and Facebook updates maybe archived by Google but don’t carry the same weight as fresh content on blogs.

You own the content. If your blog is self-hosted then you own all of the content that you put up on your blog. This is often not the case when you post content to Twitter, YouTube or Facebook. Additionally, on your blog YOU determine how that content is shown to the world and don’t have to fit within anyone’s 140 or 160 character parameters.

Analytics. On your self-hosted blog you can easily install Google Analytics and see who is visiting your website, how long they stay on your site, and where they come from. This is extremely useful in deciding which advertising/marketing methods are working for you. This is also the reason why when you update Facebook or post links in Twitter they should direct people back to your blog so you can track what your community is doing and use the information to further provide value to the community.

YOU are the Producer. The beauty of social media and Web 2.0 is that it allows you and me to become producers of whatever type of content we want to share with the world. No longer do we have to rely on Madison Avenue Ad agencies to tell us what to think and how to be cool. You can become a thought leader for your community. So why are you holding out on sharing this gift, your thoughts with the world?

Bonus tip!!! Traditional media (radio, tv, newspapers) will find your blog (from Google) and will recognize you as an expert. Because of my efforts in providing content to you a producer from WPTV reached out to me for an interview earlier this month. Watch WPTV Interview here. This can happen for you too!

To Your Prosperity,

Mande

P.S. Remember if you need help with implementing ANY of the social media tips and tactics I talk about on FreeSocialMediaHelp.com don’t hesitate to contact me for a consultation!

P.P.S. What are you blogging about? Please share your blog with me by leaving a comment below!

Have you written a bunch of articles and submitted them to directories AND still NOT seeing the tidal wave of daily traffic to your website that you had hoped for?

Here are 7 simple steps that you can use for every article you’ve ever written and every article in your future. Take each of these steps in addition to submitting your article to the directory(s) of your choice.

STEP 1 – make sure that your article is posted on your own website or blog. You’ll want to post the entire article on the blog. Don’t worry if this is outside the parameters of your normal format. PREFACE the article with a note to your readers, thanking them for their flexibility and ASK them to make a comment.

STEP 2 – send out a Tweet (message from Twitter) about your new blog post and include a link directly to the post. It’s helpful if you can find a clever hook for your tweet that includes the benefits the reader will receive after reading your article.

STEP 3- log into your Digg.com account SO you can ‘digg’ your blog post. Digg is a social bookmarking application that allows users to share and vote on content that they like.

STEP 4 – send another ‘Tweet’. This time you’ll tweet something clever about your ‘digg’ article. ASK people to ‘Digg it’ if they like it. This will increase your Digg score and move your article up higher on the Digg.com search pages.

STEP 5 – update your Facebook friends about your blogged article. Here is another opportunity to come up with a unique spin on the benefits the reader will receive from reading your article.

STEP 6 – In another status post you can ask your Facebook friends to Digg the article if they like it. This request should include a link to your ‘digg article’.

STEP 7 – periodically check your blog to respond and thank those that left comments on your blog. It spreads virtual goodwill to thank everyone who comments on your blog or retweets your message.

Seven ways to use social media GETS more eyeballs to see your article. These are steps you can use over and over again with every article you have. YOU CAN even schedule content for Facebook status updates or Twitter on days you are on vacation.

If you are paying even the slightest bit of attention to the conversation inside of Twitter then you’ll notice that groups of people often include a # followed by a common group of characters in their tweets. Example #swineflu. So what’s the story with these? The Twitter Fan Wiki defines hashtags as: “Hashtags are a community-driven convention for adding additional context and metadata to your tweets. They’re like tags on Flickr, only added inline to your post. You create a hashtag simply by prefixing a word with a hash symbol: #hashtag. Hashtags were developed as a means to create ”groupings” on Twitter, without having to change the basic service.” Anyone can create a hashtag. Here are the simple steps.

Follow @hashtags on Twitter. They will follow you back automatically, and your hashtags will be tracked.

Search what hashtags are in use at http://search.twitter.com

Establish what you want your hashtag to be. I’ve created one for FreeSocialMediaHelp.com #FSMH

Start using it in your tweets. Notify your user base or community of the hashtag.

Regularly browse Hashtags.org or TwitterGroups to see who is tweeting your hashtag.

Best practices for Hashtags:

Conferences, events or meetings #barcampblock

Brands or products #microsoftoffice

When you post a quote. #quote

How about creating a hashtag for your brand or product or service? Feel free to post your hashtags here! I’ll be happy to RT any of my readers tweets where appropriate. Where did hashtags originate? Hashtags were popularized during the San Diego forest fires in 2007 when Nate Ritter used the hashtag “#sandiegofire” to identify his updates related to the disaster. No one can say Twitter is useless now!

As I came back from the Social Media Club South Florida meeting the discussion among the carpool participants centered around what I’ll call “Twitter Squatting”.

Very much like domain squatting but the registering of Twitter Profile names in various fashions to have in a collection in hopes that someday they might be sold for monetary gain.

Since aquiring a new Twitter profile only requires a new email address, Twitter Squatting is quite easy for someone with just a little time on their hands.

So I’m advising all my loyal followers to go out there and get their name is every fashion they can think of and register it themselves as well as any version of their business. I don’t want you to be caught later having to pay someone for a Twitter profile name.
