We’ve all got someone we admire when it comes to social media. You know that someone who always has the perfect tweet or Facebook status update. Someone who always gets a ton of comments and retweets. It’s time to stop letting perfectionism detour you from getting your message out into the world. The best antidote to envy is exercise.
Here’s a quick exercise to build your short messaging muscles.
- Start by writing out a short message about a recent blog post or article you’ve written.
- Rewrite that message starting with a verb
- Rewrite that message again taking out any ‘extra’ words. By extra I mean words that aren’t necessary to understanding the message
- Add a question to the message or a statement that is intended to illicit feedback
- Send out each of those messages and note which gets Re-Tweeted or commented on the most.
Keep tweaking ‘how’ you write your messages with the intent of getting attention and you’ll soon be on your way to having enviable tweets.

Great post Mande! It is so true that proofreading and tweaking can help. Especially on short messages like Twitter allows, getting the most out of it crucial.
Thanks for providing motivation to begin. Technology is changing so rapidly it is more important to participate than spectate. Good is good enough!
